About Peru

PERU, THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND THE HOME OF THE INCAS

The Incas forged an incredible civilization that learned how to tame the geography of Peru. This ancient society lived in harmony with the rivers, the sun, the rain, the ocean, the jungle and the cold dryness of the Andes mountains. More info

My Favorite Moments in Peru and Why You Should Go Visit

Travel is a series of moments — some moments we will remember for the rest of our lives, while others simply evaporate from our consciousness. But it’s these memorable moments that make travel special. And any trip to Peru is packed full of these unique moments, whether it’s an experience that lifts you out of the ordinary, one that gives you insight into a country, culture, and even yourself, or one that helps you make a connection with others. Here are some of my favorite moments from my various trips to the country.

Night Skies

Across much of Peru, the low population density, unspoiled nature, and mountainous terrain make for great views of the night sky. During our trek to Choquequirao, we would be treated to unrivaled views of the Milky Way, whether it was sipping on pisco, watching the stars fade in and out of view behind the fog during our first night camping at Marampata, or hiking back up to the ruins at Choquequirao for sunset and remaining well past dark. With fireflies dancing around our heads, we spent hours lying in the grass of the Plaza Principal, staring up at the billions of stars and negative spaces in the dense river of the Milky Way, searching for the celestial animals of the Inca. The llama. The snake. The fox with its red burning eye.

Nature

Pachamama or Mother Earth played a central role in the Inca belief system and maintaining a balance with her plays a prominent role in the Peruvian national narrative still to this day. There are many ways to connect to Pachamama in Peru, whether it’s hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, surfing, white water rafting, mountain climbing, or even bird watching. From the jungles of the Amazon to the Andes mountains and the arid coastline beaches, Peru has 28 of the world’s 32 microclimates covered. One of the favorite hikes of all time remains the nine-mile roundtrip trek to Lake 69 in the Cordillera Blanca — a pristine, glacier-fed alpine lake nestled in an amphitheater of 20,000-foot mountains (https://www.backpacker.com/trips/peru-cordillera-blanca-huarascan).

People

Peruvians abound with selfless generosity, whether it’s sharing a meal or simply offering up a smile. Peru is a welcoming place. While strolling through Chavin, we happened up a celebration of sorts. A marching band played as a large group of people drank beer and danced the Huayno— a traditional Andean couples dance that involves complicated turns, hops, and foot taps. Thinking we would just stay and watch a while, we were immediately pulled in to join the festivities. Despite my complete lack of rhythm, the group was excited to try and teach us the intricacies of the dance and share a beverage or two.

Food

Ceviche, lomo saltado, aji de gallina, pisco sours, and even guinea pig or cuy — the food in Peru is delicious. Lima alone houses a number of Michelin star restaurants that are continually rated best in the world. On our last morning in Cusco, we were treated to a cooking class at restaurant Marcelo Batata. Chef Jose Luis Lescano first took us through the history of food and key ingredients that make up Peruvian cuisine (did you know that jerky comes from the Quechua word for dehydrated llama meat?) before bringing us into the kitchen to try our hand at making limey, salty, and spicy trout ceviche and whipping up some two-minute alpaca saltado for ourselves. Full of enthusiasm and humor, he showed us how to shake our woks like Shakira before lighting them on fire in a dramatic ending.

Wonder

Each time I have traveled to Peru there have been distinct moments of wonder — sights that stop you in your tracks and leave you grasping for words. One was cresting the ridge after a lung-busting hike to see the turquoise blue waters of Lake 69 and the other, rounding the corner for that initial view of Machu Picchu, after skipping the bus and opting for a hot and sweaty hike up from Aguas Calientes.

History

Peru’s unique history has been shaped by thousands of years of Andean civilizations, leaving the country rich in archeological sites still being uncovered to this day. While exploring the ancient site of Chavin de Huantar, we got an up close and personal look at the Lanzon or great spear which represents the god for whom the prehistoric temple was constructed. Standing 15-feet tall, deep within the bowels of the old temple, the spear emanated power through its supernatural being carved in stone.

I could go on and on but I suggest you head to Peru to create your own memorable moments that will stick with you the rest of your life.
